During Monday’s Governance and Priorities Committee meeting, Mayor Gerald Aalbers reaffirmed the city’s support of the annual Indigenous Economic Partnership summit.

The summit will be in Lloydminster in mid-October and will be the fifth consecutive time it has been held in the city.

“We know there has been a lot of activity in the community by the Indigenous communities around us, and there are business opportunities that exist today and will grow forward. The opportunity to develop that relationship and build bonds are very important,” said Aalbers.

The summit is held by the Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce, and since 2015, the City has been the sponsor of the VIP dinner.

Previous speakers at the summit have included Chief Clarence Louie, Chief of Osoyoos Indian Band, Heather Abbey, founder of ShopIndig.ca and Terry Bird, lead advisor First Nation and Metis initiatives for K+S Potash.

“I think this is a great opportunity,” said Aalbers. “It’s not just local, not just provincial, it’s a national event, and I think it’s been highlighted in the past and will continue to be highlighted.”

At the summit, there will be a new portion in the afternoon called “Business Connections,” which will allow Indigenous and non-Indigenous businesses to form partnerships.

While this is an expense which is already approved, the mayor said it was good for people to know where money is being spent and why.
